You could call them a “supergroup” and it would be absolutely legitimate and applicable. Last In Line is the stellar hard rock act that was originally begun as a tribute to the late, great Ronnie James Dio by former members of his band. At the time of the band’s inception, guitarist Vivian Campbell (Def Leppard), bassist Jimmy Bain (Rainbow), and drummer Vinny Appice (Black Sabbath) were eager to share the music from their years in the band DIO. The trio were integral players on the first three DIO studio albums, Holy Diver (1993), Last In Line (1984) and Sacred Heart (1985). Eventually recruiting vocalist Andrew Freeman (Hurricane, Lynch Mob) into the fold, Last In Line transformed into a bonafide working band with their 2014 studio debut of all original material, Heavy Crown.
The critically acclaimed debut (produced by Jeff Pilson of Dokken/Foreigner fame) was a bold musical statement that channeled the traditional sound and style of the early DIO material. At the same time, it showcased Last In Line‘s ability to stand on their own creative merits. Unfortunately, the band suffered the passing of Jimmy Bain in early 2016 but, despite the devastating loss, they have continued on. They recruited bassist Phil Soussan (Ozzy Osbourne, Billy Idol), keyboardist Erik Norlander (Asia, Lana Lane) and recently announced a full U.S. tour.
